Guardians of the Galaxy: Review

Marvel’s latest summer blockbuster arrived with a somewhat strange feeling of unfamiliarity to it.  Away from the Avengers characters we have grown accustomed to the titular Guardians were a bunch of rag-tag randomers that very few people outside of the die-hard comic book fans would have known about.  So the hype around Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t necessarily based on what had gone before, but around what Marvel could do to take their films in a new direction.  Happily, Guardians was something different, and a — Read more →

Immortals: Review

Action films sometimes have to make the distinction between going for an all-out assault on the audience’s sense of excitement or weaving a good story around some exciting set-pieces.  Sadly, 2011 film Immortals chose another path – one that had no real ‘wow’ factor or a good story to write home about. Sadly, 30 Rock came to an end in January 2013 with a shortened Season 7.  It was a critical darling, with Emmy nominations galore each year and great reviews, but it didn’t quite pull — Read more →

From Reality to Fiction

This is an English translation of the original post “Bho Fìrinn gu Ficsean“ Almost everyone I know is watching Game of Thrones at the moment, a TV program set around a civil war in a fictional land of Westeros that’s rather similar to medieval Britain.  It’s very good, even if I find it a little slow-going at times, and one of the things that makes the programme so gripping is how deep the backstory is.  Stories are told of kings from thousands of years before — Read more →
